Question

A sample of rock is found to contain 2.5 times as many lead-207 nuclei as uranium-235 nuclei. What is the fraction of uranium-235 that now remains (relative to the original number of uranium-235 that was in the sample)? Express your answer using two significant figures. Fraction remaining = ____ On the basis of the data given in More Precisely 7-2, what is the age of the sample (Be careful not to round your answer from the previous part). Express your answer using two significant figures. t = ____ On the basis of the data given in More Precisely 7-2, and the age you calculated In part B, what ratio of uranium-238 to lead-206 nuclei would you expect in this same sample? Express your answer using two significant figures.

Explanation / Answer

no of Uranium molecules present in the sample = x

no of Lead molecules present in the sample = 2.5*x

total no of molecules in the sample = x + 2.5*x

= 3.5*x

the fraction of uranium that now remains = no of uranium molecules present/total no of molecules

= x/(3.5*x)

= 0.286
