Question
Shown are two straight wires. Notice the currents are not the same. a. Find the magnitude and direction of the magnetic field created by the left side wire at the location of the right side wire which is 6.00cm away. b. Find the magnetic force (magnitude and direction) on the right side wire due to the field from the left side wire. c. Find the force on the left side wire due to the magnetic field from the right side wire. d. What is the total magnetic field strength 4.0 cm to the left of the right side wire. This is X on the diagram.Explanation / Answer
Parts (a), (b) and (c) are correct.
d)
Magnetic field due to left wire at X :
B1 = u*I1/(2*pi*r) = 1.26*10^-6*12/(2*pi*0.02) <------- u = 1.26*10^-6, r = 2 cm = 0.02 m
So, B1 = 1.2*10^-4 T (directed into the page)
Similarly, magnetic field due to right wire at X:
B2 = 1.26*10^-6*18/(2*pi*0.04)
= 9*10^-5 T (directed into the page)
As both the magnetic fields are directed into the page, thus they both will get added up to get the net magnetic field
So, Bnet = B1 + B2
= 1.2*1-^-4+ 9*10^-5
= 2.1*10^-4 T (directed into the page)
