Question

4.) How could one shield a piece of equipment from a strong magnetic field? 5.) What is meant by a declination of the earth’s magnetic fiels and inclination of the earth’s magnetic field? 6.) Discuss how the tangent galvanometer may be used as a current measuring device. 7.) Assume the tangent galvanometer to be set up as you used it in the laboratory. Knowing the horizontal component of the earth’s magnetic fiels, calculate the current required to deflect the compass needle (a) 30 degrees (b) 60 degrees, and (c) 90 degrees. 8.) Given two bars of iron. One is a magnet, the other is not. With no markings on the bars of iron and no additional equipment or supplies, describe a method to determine which of the bars is magnetized.

Explanation / Answer

4.)

Equipments can be shielded from strong magnetic field by surrounding the equipments with material of high magnetic permeability (higher then equipment it is shielding)

A high permeability material provides an alternative route to the magnetic field , the magnetic field tends to flow through this material due to its high permeability and avoids other objects inside it .

One of such material is Mu metal ( alloy of nickel and iron) .
