Question

Show all your work and include units In your answers for full credit. A 2.0-cm tall object is placed 6.0 cm in front of a diverging lens whose focal length is -8.0 cm. Complete the ray diagram below to locate the image (please use a ruler!). Use three rays, and be sure to draw an arrow that shows the location, height, and orientation of the image. Using the lens and magnification equations, calculate the image distance, magnification factor, and image height. Indicate whether the image is real or virtual and whether it is upright or inverted.

Explanation / Answer

1/di + 1/do = 1/f

1/di = 1/f - 1/do

do = 6cm

f = -8 cm

1/di = -1/8 - 1/6

di = -3.43 cm

m = -di/do = -(-3.43)/6 = 0.57

m = hi/ho

0.57 = hi/2

hi = 1.14 cm
