Question
This is a very good exercise on Lenz's law. A long straight wire is carrying an electric current I in the direction shown in the figure. A wire loop of radius R is located in the vicinity of the wire (but has no current of its own). (a) Show the direction of the magnetic field of the straight current which threads through the loop. (b) Assume the current in the wire is increasing and show the direction of the induced magnetic field in the loop? (c) What is the direction of the induced emf and the induced current in the loop? (d) Assume the current is decreasing and repeat parts (a), (b) and (c). (e) Now move the loop to a location above the straight wire. Assume the current is increasing and repeat steps (a), (b) and (d).Explanation / Answer
As per as right-hand rule. Thumb represents the direction of current and fingers represent the direction of the magnetic field for a straight current carrying conductor, and in the case of loop carrying current thumb is the direction of current and fingers represents the direction of the current.
As per as the Lenz's law, induced magnetic field always opposes the change. That means it will be in the direction of decreasing magnetic field and in opposite direction of increasing magnetic field.
