Question

A child applies a force F  parallel to the x -axis to a 10.0-kg sled moving on the frozen surface of a small pond. As the child controls the speed of the sled, the x -component of the force she applies varies with the x -coordinate of the sled as shown in the figure (Figure 1) .

A-Calculate the work done by the force F  when the sled moves from x=0 to x=8.0m.

B-

Calculate the work done by the force F  when the sled moves from x=8.0m to x =12.0m.

C-Calculate the work done by the force F  when the sled moves from x=0 to x =12.0m.

Explanation / Answer

(a)

work done from x = 0 to x = 8 m

W1 = area of OAB (from the figure )

W1 = 1/2*8m *10N

W1 = 40 J

(b)

work done from x = 8m to x = 12m

W2 = Area ABC

W2 = 1/2*(12-8)*10

W2 = 20 J

(c)

work done from x= 0 m to x = 12 m

W3 = area of OAC

W3 = area of OAB + area of ABC

W3 = W1 + W2

W3 = 40+ 20

W3 = 60 J
