Question

The current through a 3.0 mH inductor is being built up from zero by a 1.5 V battery. The equivalent series resistance of the circuit is 6, 0 ohm. a) Calculate the inductive time constant. ________s b) Calculate the current 2.3 ms after the switch is closed. (Then the exponent in Eq. (6) equals -Rt/L = t/_L = -2.3 ms/0.50 ms = -4.6.) ________mA When 250 mA flows through a 3.0 mH MA, inductor, switches are thrown so that the current begins to decay with an equivalent series resistance of 6.0 ohm and no battery. Calculate the current 2.3 ms after the switch is closed. (Then the exponent in Eq. (8) equals -Rt/L = t/pi_L = -2.3 ms/0.50 ms = -4.6.)________mA

Explanation / Answer

a) Time constant = L/Rseconds = 3 x 10^-3 /6= 0.5 ms

b) I = 1.5/ 6 (1-e^(-2.3/0.5)) =0.25 ( 1- 0.01005) ( e^-4.6= 0.01005)

I = 0.2475 A appprx

c) I = Imax e^(-Rt/L) = 250 x 10^-3 ( e^ -4.6) = 250 x 10^-3 (0.01005) = 2.5125 mA
