Question

Exercise 22.1 A flat sheet of paper of area 0.185 m is oriented so that the normal to the sheet is at an angle of 64 to a uniform electric field of magnitude 13 N/C Part A Find the magnitude of the electric fiuxthrough the sheet. Express your answer using two significant figures. N.ma/C My Answers Give Up Submit Part B Does the answer to part A depend on the shape of the sheet? O yes O no Submi My Answers Give Part C For what angle dbetween the nonmal to the sheet and the electric field is the magnitude of the flux through the sheetlargest? Express your answer using two significant figures. Submit My Answers Give up Part D For what angle between the normal to the sheet and the electric field is the magnitude of the flux through the sheet smslest? Express your answer using two significant figures.

Explanation / Answer

The flux of a uniform electric field "E" crossing a plane surface "A" at angle "theta" is;

Flux = EACos(theta)

a) Flux = (13)(0.185)Cos(64) = 1.05 N-m^2/C

b) No. For a plane surface the flux only depends on the area, not the shape.

c) Cos(theta) is a maximum (= 1) at theta = 0 deg (E crossing perpendicularly)

d) and is a minumim (=0) at theta = 90 deg (E skimming over the surface)

e) So theta = 0 gives max flux and theta = 90 gives minimum (zero) flux.
