Question

Fill the circular transparent tank half full of water so that the water level is aligned along 90 degree line as shown in the above picture. Place the laser ray box at the top of the tank, turn on the laser light and align the light source so that the laser ray shines down through the center of the tank along the 0 degree line. Record the angle of incidence, reflection and refraction at this position. Move the ray box so the ray now shines along the 10 degree line. Carefully record the angle of incidence, reflection, and refraction into Excel. Do this in 10 degree increments until you reach 90 degree (DO NOT DIRECTLY LOOK toward the laser beam). In Excel graph the sine of the incident angle on the Y axis and the sine of refracted angle on the X axis. Do a linear fit and find the slope of this line. Attach your data table and graph to this lab. What should the slope of this graph represent? slope = sin 01/sin 02 = n1/n2 = sinoc = 1.366 Does the graph support the law of refraction? Explain. Yes, it support the law of refraction. Because?

Explanation / Answer

By snells law, refractive index= sin(angle of incicence)/ sin( angle of refraction)

the slope of graph is 1.366. This is the refractive index of water. Since the line shows almost a perfect postive correlation, the refractive index is same for all observations.

Hence it supports the law of refraction.
