Explanation / Answer

1. Lima is closer to the ocean than Cusco, yet it is noticeably drier because of it's location. Lima is situated in the coast along area of pacific ocean and in the subtropical desert. It is in the east foothills of andres mountain. The western winds blow there from west to east. But as the mountains present act as an obstacle, the wind blows to the high. When it pass over the andres it become cool and then it rains in the east.. So the western part of andres that is Lima gets a rainshadow area and leeward side where moistless area creates, and the rainfall does not happen too much. On other hand Cusco is situated in the east of Lima so, the rainfall happen often in rainy season. Also the cold Humboldt Current runs along Peruvian and Chilean coast moderates the heat of the tropical sun, but at the same time high humidity more than 90% with clouds and mist produced. The prevailing winds blow to a particular direction in the afternoon . So, in Lima when winds blow in prevailing direction that is south east ,the wind become calm. So, the rainfall does not happen in this area. Though Lima is situated in tropical region andres mountain prevent the area from tropical storm and rainfall. Because of these reason, though Lima is closer to the ocean than Cusco, yet it is noticeably drier..
