explain how new plate m . onitea Arap Emirates Question 2: Figure 2 shows the Plate-Mantle Convection Model. (pts 20) 1) Explain upwelling and downwelling convection currents and movements by using the word "density", "temperature", and "age" Spreading center Hot spot Subducting oceanic lithosphere Hot rising mantle plume Hot heat removed by rising mega-plume Core Figure 2. Plate-Mantle convection model (Whole-Mantle model) Question 3: Using Figure 3, explain how new plate material is created at a divergent plate

Explanation / Answer

2) in upwelling currents, vertical water movement and mixing brings cold, nutrient which water toward the surface while pushing warmer, less dense water downward, where it condenses and sinks. This creates a cycle of a prevailing and downwelling. Prevailing winds, Ocean surface currents, and the associated mixing influence the physical , chemical and biological characteristics of the ocean as well as Global climate. Deep ocean current density driven and it differ from surface current in scale, speed and energy. Water density is affected by the temperature, salinity and depth of the water. The colder and saltier the ocean water, the denser it is. the greater the density difference between different layer in the water column, the greater the mixing and circulation. Density differences in ocean water contribute to a global scale circulation system, also called the Global conveyor belt. In downwelling accumulation and sinking of higher density material beneath lower density material, such as cold or saline water beneath warmer or fresher water or cold air beneath warm air. It is sinking limb of a convection cell.

3) as plates move away from each other the lithosphere thins and tears. At this divergent plate boundary new oceanic lithosphere is created in the gaps from upwelling Magma from the mantle. This upwelling Magma forms mid ocean ridges, Long Mountain chains that mark the boundaries between diverging plates. At these boundaries, two plates move away from one another. As the two move apart, mid Ocean Ridge are created as magma from the Mantle upwells through a crack in the oceanic Crust and cools.
