Question

1. a - If you drive by a road cut and see river gravels on top of sands on top of old marine clays, explain what geologic process are you looking at?

b - Let’s say you are about to going scuba diving.  If you started your dive right at Huntington Beach ( CA ), what kind of sedimentary rocks would you find as you dove deeper and deeper.  Explain the rocks that form at different depths.

c - Rock that consists of 80% halite and 13% gypsum has been found at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea.  What does that tell you about the mediterranean sea?

d - What are three typical limestones and how do they form?

e - What is “lithification” (and what are the two most common processes that result in a rock’s “lithification?”)

Explanation / Answer

a.It represents a regression. As we know that gravels and sand present high energy conditions and marine shale low energy conditions. So once there must be a sea which is regressed and rivers come there.

b. first, you get a fine sand deposit( deposits by wave action), then argillaceous sediments (shale ) finally you get limestone deposits formed by deposition by sea animals shells.

c. halite formed where evaporation rate is very high compared to precipitation. It means there must by less supply of freshwater and evoparion will be very high.

d.fossiliferous limestone( conatain fossils)

coquina limestone ( fine grained )

Oolitic limestone( contain radial texture)

e. when sediments drop by the river later they compact to form solid rock. During compaction, cementation occurs which we called lithification.
