Question
1. Below is a map of temperature from stations in and around Golden, CO the morning
of 27-Aug-2012 (Figure 1). Figure 2 is a detail of one station (Mountain Ridge) while
Figure 3 is a composite of four stations nearby but in the mountains.
a. Summarize the differences in temperature, plotting as a function of elevation and
pressure (only those five stations in Figures 2-3).
b. Are the temperature differences between stations purely adiabatic? Calculate the
potential temperature for all stations. Are all stations at the same potential
temperature?
c. What factors might contribute to differences in temperature between stations
(other than the dry adiabat)? Does time of day play any role in the distribution of
temperature?
Explanation / Answer
As expected, hiher altitud is associated to lower air temperatures. The exception is "lower douglas mountain. This could be due to the fact that this station is at a valley of a mountain and during the night and early morning, cold denser air slides down the slope of the mountain and settles at the valley.
The response of temperatues to pressure is mor erratic. Pressure is influenced by elevetion. The higher the elevation the lower the pressure.
