Question
Google Earth Activity Make sure that you have all settings in metrics. To change this, click on Tools Options. When the window comes up make sure that under Units of Measurement "Meters, Kilometers" is selected. 5. Enter these coordinates into the search box 11.3167 N, 142.2500° E (Enter as 113167, 142.2500). Zoom out to approximately 3400 km (eye alt, lower right hand comer). What is the tectonic feature you are looking at? What kind of plate boundary is this? What plates are involved at this boundary? Enter the coordinates 30.93979° N, 41.573175° W (Enter as 30.93979, -41.573175). Zoom ou to approximately 4800 km. 6. What is the name of this tectonic feature, and what type of plate boundary is it? In the Atlantic Ocean basin, where is the youngest ocean floor and why? 14Explanation / Answer
5. (i) The tectonic feature is a Trench which forms in the subduction zones.
P.S.- The feature present at the coordinates is Challenger deep of the Mariana Trench. It is the deepest point of Earth.
(ii) The plate boundary is of a Convergent plate margin (also called the Destructive plate margin) formed by subduction of an heavier oceanic crust (more older) beneath a younger and lighter oceanic crust.
(iii) Older and denser Pacific plate to the east is subducting beneath the smaller, lighter and younger Mariana plate occuring to the west to the Mariana Trench.
6. (i) The name of the tectonic feature is Mid Oceanic Ridge. The Mid Oceanic Ridges form in the Divergent Plate margins (also called the Constructive type of margins). At the Mid Oceanic Ridges new oceanic plate forms and as a result a ridge push force develops which helps in the spreading of the oceanic plate towards subduction zones.
(ii) At the Mid-Atlantic Ridge of the Atlantic Ocean basin
At the Mid Oceanic Ridges, new oceanic plate forms. So at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge of the Atlantic Ocean basin, new Atlantic ocean plate is forming. Thus, the youngest ocean floor of the Atlantic Ocean basin occur at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Oldest ocean floor occur near the Subduction zone.
