Question

1. Soils warm following exposure to warm air masses and solar radiation. The rate that soil warms is dictated by (a) the direct access the warmth has to the soil (bare soil warms faster than covered soil) and (b) the specific heat capacity of the soil. Therefore, not all soils warm up the same way. To answer the following questions, think about how we can manage soil for faster warming in the spring so that we can plant seeds earlier. A. Describe how differences in soil color result in differing ability of a soil to warm up in spring. (3 pts) B. Describe how differences in soil wetness result in differing ability of a soil to warm up in spring. (3 pts) C. Describe two effects that tillage has on soil physical properties and the resulting effect on ability of the tilled soil to warm up faster or slower than untilled soils in the spring. (3 pts)

Explanation / Answer

1.

A)

Mainly there are two colour of soil which are dominant.

i) Black soil colour usually indicates the presence of orgnic matter.

In the spring season, the moisture evaporates, the soil shrinks and forms the cracks . due to the cracks , oxygenation of the soil occurs .this makes black soil more fertile.

it it found in high rainfall areas.

ii) Red soil colour indicates the present of free iron oxides.

it is found in low rainfall areas. they have low water holding capacity. it is good for dry farming because it does not required more moisture.

B) In wet condition, black soil shows high water holding capacity because it can hold moisture for longer period. also, it contains organic matter and which is suitable for irrigation.

on the other hand, red soil red soil shows low water holding capacity because when this soil come in contact with water , oxidation starts and ferric oxide forms.

C) optimum condition for tillage is to tilled when it is least moist.

because of tillage, the black soil loses the oxygen, which enhance it fertility for next crop.

red soil does not require more moisture and hence even after tillage .

tilled soil will warm up faster than untilled because . when tilled, it loses its moisture.
