Question
A. Wood has a very low conductivity. Does it still have a low conductivity if it is very hot - that is, in the stage of smoldering red-hot coals?
Yes or No
B. Could you safely walk across a bed of red-hot wood coals with bare feet if you step quickly?
Yes or No
C .Although the coals are hot, does much heat conduct from them to your feet if you step quickly?
Yes or No
D. One container is filled with argon gas and the other with krypton gas. If both gases have the same temperature, in which container are the atoms moving faster?
both have the same speed, krypton , argon
E. Which atoms have the greatest average speed in a mixture, U-238 or U-235?
U-238 or U-235
Could you do the same on red-hot iron coals?
Yes or No
Explanation / Answer
D)
At the same temperature, the average value of the translational kinetic energy [(1/2) m <v2>] will be the same for both helium and argon. krypton has a larger mass so it will have a smaller value of <v2> or vrms. argon has a smaller mass so it will have a larger value of <v2> or vrms.
so argon is correct answer
(e)when mixed, the U- 235 and U- 238 atoms will eventually reach equlibrium where the have the same temperature. that means that if th emass U- 238 atoms have same temperature and thus the same average kinetic energy as less massive U- 235 atoms, the U- 235 atoms have hive average speed than the U- 238
