Question
Two blocks are connected by a string, as shown in the figure . The smooth inclined surface makes an angle of 35 with the horizontal, and the block on the incline has a mass of 5.7 kg. The mass of the hanging block is m = 3.8 kg .
Part B
Find the magnitude of the hanging block's acceleration.
Express your answer using two significant figures.
a = ______m/s^2?
Explanation / Answer
Tension in the string is same throughout. Let the hanging block is moving downwards with acceleration a. Same will be the acceleration of the other block but in the upward direction of the inclined plane.
Force eqution for the hanging block is:
mg - T = ma
38 - T = 3.8*a ...........................1
Force equation for the bigger block is:
T - Mgsin(35) = Ma
T - 57(0.57) = 5.7* a
T - 32.49 = 5.7* a ......................................2
Now Add eq 1 and 2
5.51 = 9.5 * a
a = 0.58 m/s^2
