Question

Learning Goal:

To understand how to calculate capacitance, voltage, and charge for a combination of capacitors connected in series.

Consider the combination of capacitors shown in the figure.(Figure 1) Three capacitors are connected to each other in series, and then to the battery. The values of the capacitances are C, 2C, and 3C, and the applied voltage is V. Initially, all of the capacitors are completely discharged; after the battery is connected, the charge on plate 1 is Q.

Explanation / Answer

Given

capacitors are in series combination of capacitances C,2C,3C , connected to a battery of voltage is deltaV

we know tha when the capacitors are in series , the charge across each capacitor is same but the potential difference will be changes according to their charge

adn similar way the capacitors are in parallel , the charge across each capacitor is different and the potential difference will be same .

net capacitance of the given circuit is Cn = C +2C+3C = 6C

net charge is Q = Cn*deltaV

       Q = 6C*delta V

the potential is delta V = delta V1+ delta V2 + delta V3
