Question
Based on an exercise from Section 25.6 (Image Formation by Lenses) of OpenStax College Physics.
The lens of a camera has a 44.6 mm focal length and is being used to photograph a flower that is 37 cm tall and 90.8 cm away. When the image of the flower is focused on the film, what is the height of the image? Give a positive value if the image is upright, and a negative value if the image is inverted.
(Hint: the units are highlighted for a reason; be careful.)
(Not a hint: please give this as a two-significant figure answer, regardless of any quantities that might appear in the problem.)
Explanation / Answer
First we will calculate distance of image from the lens of camera.
from lens formula,
1 / v + 1 / u = 1 / f
1 / v = 1 / f - 1 / u
1 / v = 1 / (0.0446) - 1 / (0.908)
v = 4.69 cm
formula of magnification,
hi / ho = -v / u
hi / 37 = -4.69 / 90.8
hi = -1.91 cm
