Question

A 10 kg crate is placed on a horizontal conveyor belt. The materials are such that Aus- 0.50 and Auk 0.30 a. Draw a free-body diagram showing all the forces on the crate if the conveyer belt runs at constant speed. b. Draw a free-body diagram showing all the forces on the crate if the conveyer belt is speeding up. c. What is the maximum acceleration the belt can have without the crate slipping? d. If the acceleration of the belt exceeds the value determined in part c, what is the acceleration of the crate?

Explanation / Answer

maximum acceleration such that the crate does not slip is achieved, when static friction is equal to mass of the crate*acceleration of the belt.

when the belt exceeds that value, friction force is still acting on the forward direction ,but in this scenario it will be kinetic friction and being its value lesser than the static friction, acceleration of the crate will be lower than acceleration of the belt and it will slip and w.r.t. the belt, crate will look like it is slipping backwards.

but from the rest point of view, friction force is still acting in forward direction and acceleration is still in forward direwction.

hence the acceleration is positive.
