Question
Background:
The nineteenth century saw the rise of nationalism whether it took the form of struggles for rights in Europe or anti-colonial outburst in China and India. At the same time, the Industrial revolution which began in the middle of the previous century in Europe spread to America and then to Japan. The results of the Industrial revolution were to alter the composition of society in terms of both economics and social class. The consequence of both these movements was the height of imperialism as newly industrializing countries (which had spread globally in terms of political and economic patterns) sought to expand their sphere of influence. In the latter part of the 19th century, they sought to gain captive markets for the their goods as well as natural resources at the expense of traditional crafts in Africa and India. Wars for fought to gain advantage as, for example, two opium wars to force China to buy opium grown in India or wars to force African States to replace slaves as an item of commerce with palm oil. The climax of this force was the scramble for Africa. 1884-1890.
Question: What is the imperialism of one of the following countries-- Germany or France in a global area?
Explanation / Answer
Imperialism in Germany was a series of dramatic events which took place in the nineteenth century which can be described as:
When Wilhem the II came to power in 1888 ,britain russia and france all had colonial empires. he wanted germany to be a world power with a large empire as well to have a place in the sun. with a large empire germany would have access to raw material and new markets with added respect and prestige as well. germany's bid for colonial greatness was doomed from the start , it had started too late in the race for colonies all that was left were some less significant tracts in africa a few islands in the pacific and parts of china.
this quest for an empire brought germany into conflict with the other major powers . in 1911 French troops went to Morocco to help sultan's government and at the same time strengthen france's position . they occupied the capital Fez and the german government thought that france would take over the entire country.
germany responded by sending a gunboat the panther to morocco with demands that in exchange for allowing france a free hand and morocco. germany should be given the whole of thw french congo in central africa as compensation. the bristish government was alarmed , they saw the incident as a threat to the Entente and were angry at their exclusion from negotiations. britain's fleet even prepared for war, germany backed down accepting two pieces of territories in the french congo far less than they originally demanded . for germany this was a humiliating diplomatic defeat and increased the perception within germany that she eas being encircled by unfriendly powers.
then secretary of germany navy admiral tirpitz used the crisis to pass a law to enlarge the german navy. Britain then followed suit strengthen their military ties with france, the anglo french Entente had become almost a military alliance .
such events took place which motivated for german imperialism.
