Question

With friction turned on, set the initial velocity of the box to 3.0 m/s, the coefficient of friction to 0.15, and the mass to 0.8 kg. Assume the acceleration due to gravity has a magnitude of 9.8 m/s2.

(a) What is the magnitude of the frictional force acting on the block while it is in motion?

(b) What is the acceleration of the box? Define to the right as the positive direction, as in the simulation.

(c) What is the distance traveled by the box before coming to rest?

(d) How much time passes before the block comes to rest?

Explanation / Answer

(a)

Fr = u*N = u*m*g

Fr = 0.15*0.8*9.8 = 1.17 N

(b)

acceleration a = u*g

a = 1.47 m/s^2

(c)

apply third equation of motion,

v^2 = u^2 + 2*a*d

0 = 3^2 + 2*(-1.47)*d

d = 3.06 m

(d)

v = u + a*t

0 = 3 + (-1.47)*t

t = 2.04 s
