Question
A laser beam is incident at an angle of 36.0° from the vertical onto a solution of corn syrup in water. The beam is refracted to 19.24° from the vertical.
(a) What is the index of refraction of the corn syrup solution?
(b) Assume that the light is red, with vacuum wavelength 632.8 nm. Find its wavelength in the solution.
nm
(c) Find its frequency in the solution?
Hz
(d) Find its speed in the solution?
m/s
Explanation / Answer
Using Snell's Law we have 1*sin(36) = n*sin(19.24) => n = sin(36)/sin(19.24) = 1.78
b) we have = 0/n = 632.8nm/1.78 = 355.50nm
c) frequency doesn't change so f = c/0 = 3.00x10^8/632.8x10^-9 = 4.74x10^14 Hz
d) n = c/v so v = c/n = 3.00x10^8/1.78 = 1.68x10^8 m/s
