Question

The tee of the world's longest par 3 sits atop South Africa's Hanglip Mountain at 400.0 m above the green and can only be reached by helicopter. The horizontal distance to the green is 359.0 m. Neglect air resistance and answer the following questions.
(a)
If a golfer launches a shot that is 19° with respect to the horizontal, what initial velocity (in m/s) must she give the ball so it just reaches the green? (Enter the magnitude.)
[Incorrect: Your answer is incorrect.] m/s
(b)
What is the time to reach the green (in s)?
[Incorrect: Your answer is incorrect.] s

Explanation / Answer

part a:

vertical distance=400 m

horizontal distance=359 m

let speed be v m/s

horizontal speed=v*cos(19)=0.9455*v

let time taken is t seconds.

then 0.9455*v*t=359

==>v=379.6858/t...(1)

initial vertical speed=v*sin(19)=0.3256*v

then 0.3256*v*t-0.5*9.8*t^2=-400

using equation 1,

we get 0.3256*379.6858-4.9*t^2=-400

==>t=sqrt((0.3256*379.6858+400)/4.9)=10.3374 seconds

then v=379.6858/t=36.7292 m/s

part b:

time to reach the green is 10.3374 seconds.
