Help with physics homework
My answer was that it be one half of a wavelength but it says its wrong so im guessing theres 2 or more answers. Thank you
Two beams of coherent light from the same source travel different paths, arriving at point P. if completely destructive interference is to occur at point P. Which of the following could be the path difference between the two waves? e path difference between the two waves could be one-quarter of awavelength. e path difference between the two waves could be one wavelength The path difference between the two waves could be two and one-half wavelengths. The path difference between the two waves could be one-half of a wavelength The path difference between the two waves could be two wavelengthsExplanation / Answer
In constructive interference, a bright fringe is obtained on the screen. When two light waves superpose with each other in such away that the crest of one wave coincides the trough of the second wave, then the amplitude of resultant wave becomes zero and it is called destructive interference.
The condition for distructive interference is,
the path difference between the two coherent sources must be one haf wave length
r2- r1 = ( m+ 1/2) lamda
for m = 0
r2- r1 = lamda/2
m = 1
r2- r1 = 1.5 lamda
m = 2
r2- r1 = 2.5 lamda
the path difference between the two waves coul be one- half of a wave length
the path difference between the two waves could be two and one half wavelength
