Question

For this problem, you may neglect gravity as an influence. However, you should still find the techniques of projectile motion very useful. The electric field shown below is uniform (constant in size and direction everywhere) with a size of 7 middot 10^-9 N/C and in the -y direction. You will place protons into this field in turn (not simultaneously) at marked points A & B. If a proton were released from rest at point A, which direction would it move? how long would it take to move 3 m? s If a proton instead enters this electric field at point B with a speed of 4 m/s in the +x direction, how long does it take for it to travel 6 m in the +x direction? s during this time, how far is it deflected in the -y direction? m

Explanation / Answer

a) proton will move in negative y direction

F =qE = 7*10-9*1.6*10-19 = 1.12*10-27 N

a = F/m = 1.12*10-27/1.67*10-27 = 0.67 m/s2

t = sqrt(2*3/0.67) = 3s

b) time taken to travel 6m in +ve x direction = 6/4 = 1.5s

distance travelled = 0.5*0.67*1.52 = 0.75375 m
