Question
Two capacitors with C_1 = 3 mu F and C_2 = 6 mu F are individually connected to 9 Volt and 12 Volt batteries, respectively. After being charged, they are placed in a circuit with each other in such a way that the positive plate of one is connected to the negative plate of the other. Determine the final charge on each capacitor. Figure 1: Capacitor network in a de circuit. Consider the arrangement of capacitors in the circuit of the figure. Find the effective capacitance between points a and b. Find the charge associated with the 3 mu F capacitor.Explanation / Answer
5(a)
C1 = 3 uF
C2 = 6 uF
Charge on C1, q1 = C1 * v = 3 * 9 uC = 27 uC
Charge on C2, q2 = C2 * v = 6 * 12 uC = 72 uC
The two capacitors are connected in series,
Total Charge, Q = q1 + q2 = 27 + 72 uC
Q = 99 uC
Final Charge on each Capacitor, Q = 99 uC
