Question
9. Moon Phases: How well do you know the Moon phases? There are various types of information that help you to identify a particular Moon phase. See how you do with the questions below. Assume that you are viewing the Moon from the Northern Hemisphere of the Earth.
When the entire side of the Moon facing the Earth is not illuminated, the Moon is said to be a (New Moon / First Quarter Moon / Full Moon / Third Quarter Moon ) and moonset will occur at (sunrise / noon / sunset / midnight ).
We have a (New Moon / Full Moon / Quarter Moon / Crescent Moon ) when the Moon is at a right angle to the Earth-Sun line. If you see such a Moon illuminated on its right side, we call this a (First Quarter Moon / Third Quarter Moon / Waning Crescent Moon / Waxing Crescent Moon ); when the Moon is in this phase, it will be on the meridian at about (sunrise / noon / sunset / midnight ).
When the Moon is less than half-illuminated we call this a (Crescent Moon / Gibbous Moon / Quarter Moon / New Moon ). When we see such a Moon illuminated on its left side, we call this a (First Quarter Moon / Third Quarter Moon / Waxing Crescent Moon / Waning Crescent Moon ); it is easiest to see the Moon in this phase in the ( midday / afternoon (before sunset) / evening (after sunset) / early morning (before sunrise) ).
Explanation / Answer
When the entire side of the Moon facing the Earth is not illuminated, the Moon is said to be a New Moon and moonset will occur at sunset.
During New Moon, the Earth,Moon and Sun are in alignment with Moon at the centre(not perfect alignment everytime) and the moonrise and moonset will occur at the approximately the same time as the sunrise and sunset respectively.
We have a Quarter Moon when the Moon is at a right angle to the Earth-Sun line. If you see such a Moon illuminated on its right side, we call this a First Quarter Moon; when the Moon is in this phase, it will be on the meridian at about sunset.
When the Moon is less than half-illuminated we call this a Crescent Moon. When we see such a Moon illuminated on its left side, we call this a Waning Crescent Moon; it is easiest to see the Moon in this phase in the early morning (before sunrise).
The cycle of the Moon phases are:
New Moon ( 0% illumination)
Waxing Crescent ( 25% illumination)
First Quarter ( 50% illumination)
Waxing Gibbous ( 75% illumination)
Full Moon ( 100% illumination)
Waning Gibbous ( 75% illumination)
Last Quarter ( 50% illumination)
Waning Crescent ( 25% illumination)
New Moon ( 0% illumination)
