Question

A weightlifter has a basal metabolic rate of 75.5 W. As he is working out, his metabolic rate increases by about 650 W How many hours does it take him to work off a 450 Calorie bagel if he stays in bed all day? Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 10%. Double check your calculations. How long does it take him if he's working out? Calculate the amount of mechanical work necessary to lift a 113 kg barbell 1.90 m He drops the barbell to the floor and lifts it repeatedly. How many times per minute must he repeat this process to do an amount of mechanical work equivalent to his metabolic rate increase of 650 W during exercise? Could he actually do repetitions at the rate found in part (d) at the given metabolic level? Yes No

Explanation / Answer

a)

450 calorie = 1890 J

so time taken to work off = 1890/75.5 = 25.03 sec = 0.007 hours.

b)

If he is working then,

1890 / (650+75.5) = 2.60 sec

c)

Mechanical work necessary is = 113 * 9.8 * 1.90 = 2104.06 J

d)

to reach 650 j/sec = 39000 j/min

he must repeat = 39000/2104.06 = 18.54 times ~ 19 times.

e) Based on the number its not possible.
