Question

Please provide the answer and explanation for #9. Details are above the question. Thanks.

Assume that an electron orbits around a proton in a circle to make a hydrogen atom. The center of the electron's orbit is the position of the proton. As such, the positive charge of the atom and the negative charge of the effectively reside at the same point. Circle the correct answer [9] An electric field directed to the right is applied to the atom. The center of the negative charge is now left of the proton's position right of the proton's position. Two sets of parallel plates are arranged as a square as shown below. More excess charge resides on the left-right plates than on the up-down plates

Explanation / Answer

as force on a charged particle=charge*electric field

here charge is negative,

so direction of force will be opposite to that of the electric field

so the electrons will move to the left .

similarly , as the proton is positively charged, it will move along the direction of the electric field

which is to the right.

hence the center of the negative charge will be left of the proton's position.
