Question

The drawings show three charges that have the same magnitude but may have different signs. In all cases the distance d between the charges is the same. The magnitude of the charges is |q|=7.1 ?C, and the distance between them is d=5.6 mm. Determine the magnitude of the net force on charge 2 for each of the three drawings.

The drawings show three charges that have the same magnitude but may have different signs. In all cases the distance d between the charges is the same. The magnitude of the charges is lal 37.1 HC, and the distance between them is d 5.6 mm. Determine the magnitude of the net force on charge 2 for each of the three drawings. (a) (b) (c) (a) F (b) F (c) F

Explanation / Answer

a) F = F12 + F32

= k*q^2/d^2 + k*q^2/d^2

= 2*k*q^2/d^2

= 2*9*10^9*(7.1*10^-6)^2/(5.6*10^-3)^2

= 2.9*10^4 N (towards left or towards -x axis))

b) F = F12 - F32

= 0

c) F12 = F32 = k*q^2/d^2

= 1.45*10^4 N

here the angle netween F12 and F32 is 90 degrees.

so, net force,

F = sqrt(2)*F12

= sqrt(2)*1.45*10^4

= 2.1*10^4 N (45 degrees below -x axis)
