Question
Two point charges are separated by 25.0 cm see (Figure 1 Assume that gh 5.00 nC and go 13.5 nC Figure 1 of 1 10.0 cm 10.0 cm 25.0 cm Part A Find the net electric field these charges produce at point A Express your answer in newtons per coulomb to three significant figures N/C Submit My Answers Give U Incorrect, Try Again, 9 attempts remaining Part B Find the net electric field these charges produce at point B. Express your answer in newtons per coulomb to three significant figures N/C Submit My Answers Give UpExplanation / Answer
Part a)
r1 = distance of charge q1 from A = 15 cm = 0.15 m
r2 = distance of charge q2 from A = 10 cm = 0.10 m
E1 = electric field by charge q1 = k q1/r12 = (9 x 109) (5 x 10-9)/(0.15)2 = 2000 N/C towards left
E2 = electric field by charge q2 = k q2/r22 = (9 x 109) (13.5 x 10-9)/(0.10)2 = 12150 N/C towards right
Net electric field at A is given as
E = E2 - E1 = 12150 - 2000 = 10150 N/C
Part b)
r1 = distance of charge q1 from B = 10 cm = 0.10 m
r2 = distance of charge q2 from B = 10 + 25 cm = 0.35 m
E1 = electric field by charge q1 = k q1/r12 = (9 x 109) (5 x 10-9)/(0.10)2 = 4500 N/C towards right
E2 = electric field by charge q2 = k q2/r22 = (9 x 109) (13.5 x 10-9)/(0.35)2 = 991.84 N/C towards right
Net electric field at B is given as
E = E2 + E1 = 991.84 + 4500 = 5491.84 N/C
c)
E = electric field at A = 10150 N/C
q = charge on proton = 1.6 x 10-19 C
electric force on proton at A
F = qE = (1.6 x 10-19 ) (10150) = 1.624 x 10-15 N
d)
the electric field is towards right at point A. proton is a positive charge and a positive charge experience electric force in the same direction as the electric field. hence force is directed towards right.
