Question
4. The outbreak of vCJD in humans in the U.K. is believed to be due to transmission of the BSE agent from contaminated beef. a. How is it possible that the prion agent in contaminated beef could cause disease in humans (in other words, what would be required for disease transmission by this route)?b. What cattle feeding practice in the U.K. enabled the BSE outbreak in cattle to become so widespread?
c. Why didn’t the BSE outbreak also occur in cattle in the U.S.?
d. What is the evidence that the agent can be transmitted from bovine to humans 4. Explanation / Answer
Answer4: MAD COW DISEASE is basically caused by infected beef consumption. This disease is also known as BSE i.e. Bovine spongiform encephalopathy, People who had consumed infected beef flesh were reported with MCD.
a- Prions are basically misfolded protein s that loose their correct functioning. Proteins are functional only in their native state and any alterations in function can be fatal. The route of the transmission is unknown but the predicted route as suggested by the researchers is the contaminated feed eaten by cows get infected with prions which are virus-like, but not the virus. These enter the Human body when cows contaminated flesh is consumed. these prions on reaching the human body cause havoc. they affect the nervous system functioning due to its altered protein structure.
B- cattle feed including animal protein which is spoiled or rotten causes such prions generation. particularly sheep meat or goat meat.
C- The outbreak occurrence links to the poor feeding of cattle. As per reports from the scientist, US has also reported few cases of MCD but the number is lesser than the UK and also the exposure reason is unknown.
D- The united states department of agriculture USDA has conducted surveillance program giving clear evidence that cows were reported with prions and poor feed quality is the reason.
The experimental evidence was drawn by feeding mice with infected flesh and seeing the symptoms.
