Do a dimensional analysis of each equation and explain why the equation can't be correct. (a) This answer has not boen graded yet. (b) v vo at This answer has not been graded yet (c) ma a 9

Explanation / Answer

a)

Dimension of LHS : kg.m^2/s^2

Dimension of 0.5*mvo^2 = kg.m^2/s^2

dimension of sqrt(mgh) = sqrt(kg.m/s^2 . m) = kg^1/2.m/s

As dimension of sqrt(mgh) and 0.5*mvo^2 are not same, they cannot be added .

So, the equation is wrong

b)

dimension of vo = m/s

dimension of a = m/s2 , dimension of t^2 =s^2

So, dimension of at^2 = m

So, vo and at^2 cannot be added. So, equation is wrong

c)

dimension of ma = kg.m/s2

dimension of v^2 = m^2/s^2

As the dimension of both sides of the equation are not same, the equation is wrong.
