Question

In lab we looked at a string vibrating between two fixed ends and found that the frequency of the harmonic can be found by the equation f_n = nf_D where n = 1, 2, 3 and f_0 is the fundamental frequency. A string fixed at both ends is very similar (identical in this respect) to a pipe open at both ends or closed at both ends, but what about a pipe open at one and closed at the other? Imagine an organ pipe that is 4.3 meters long. Calculate the frequency for the first 5 harmonics and the fundamental frequency. Pertinent information may be given elsewhere on the test.

Explanation / Answer

fundamental frequency = v/4L

= 343 / (4*4.3)

= 19.94 m

3rd harmonic = 3v/4L = 3*19.94 = 59.82 m

5th harmonic = 5v/4L = 5*19.94 = 99.71 m
