Question
your older siblings have been picking on you all day. You decide to get back at them by building a pie slapping machine. You make a uniform object that consists of a thin rod and disk shaped pie attached at the end of the rod. The object rotates about an axis attached to the end of the rod. The movement is parallel to the ground. The mass of the rod 1.40 kg and has a length of the rod is 1.30 m . The pie has a mass 0.44 kg and has a radius of 0.15 m. a, Find the moment of inertia assuming the pie a disk. ( Notes the total length of the rod / pie system is 1.74 m) b, If you apply a force of 32.0 N at distance of 0.650 m from the rotation axis and parallel to the ground, what is the angular acceleration ? => so far i knew it starting to work on this problem is: Inertia = inertia center mass + mass x d ( d is distance from rotation axis ) Notes : some once try to help to work on this problem said at part a can not be more than 1.60 m but it give total length is 1.74 m. I hope some expert can help
Explanation / Answer
I = Irod + Idisc + Parallel axis contribution
I = 1/3Mrod L^2 + 1/4Mdisk R^2 + Mdisk (L+R)^2
or I = 1/3*1.4*(1.3)^2 + 1/4*(0.44)*(0.15)^2 + 0.44*(1.74)^2
or I = 2.1233 kgm^2
torque = moment of inertia * angular acceleration
So,
f*d = moment of inertia * angular acceleration
or 32*0.650 = 2.1233 * a
a = 9.796 or 9.8 rad/s^2
