O 0/5.26 points | Previous Answers SerPOP5 25 P.023.MI. My Notes Ask Your Teach The index of refraction for violet light in silica flint glass is 1.66, and that for red light is 1.62. What is the angular spread of 60.0° if the angle of incidence is 54.0? See figure below. 4.2 Your response is within 10% of the correct value. This may be due to roundoff error, or you could have a mistake in your calculation. Car y out all intermediate results to at least four-digit accuracy to minimize roundoff error. visible light passing through a prism of apex angle Deviation of red light Visible light Angular spread Screen

Explanation / Answer

apex angle A = 60 degree i1 = 54 degree

let a be the angle between refracted light from the first side of prism and the side

let b  be the angle between incident light from the second side of prism and the side

let r1 be refracted angle of the first side and r2 be incident angle on second side

for violet light

sin r1 = sin i1 / 1.66

r1 = 29.1 degree

a = 90 - 29.17 = 60.83 degree

b = 180 -( A+ a) = 59.17 degree

r2 = 90 - b = 30.83

sin i2 = 1.66 * sin r2

=> i2 = 58.2996 degree[ taking approximation to 4 digit]

angle of deviation = i1 + i2 - A = 54 + 58.29 - 60 = 52.2996 degree

for red light

sin r1 = sin i1 / 1.62

r1 = 29.96 degree

a = 90 - 29.96 = 60.04 degree

b = 180 -( A+ a) = 59.96 degree

r2 = 90 - b = 30.04

sin i2 = 1.62 * sin r2

=> i2 = 54.1926 degree

angle of deviation = i1 + i2 - A = 54 + 54.19 - 60 = 48.1926 degree

spread of visible light = angle of deviation for violet light - angle of deviation for red light

= 52.2996- 48.1926 = 4.107 degrees
