Question
* Albert is in a very fast train, holding a meter stick parallel to the ground. How fast must the train be traveling so that Bob (at the train station) will measure it to be 5.70% shorter? (94.3cm)
* At what speed must the train travel so that Albert sees Bob's meter stick (also held parallel to the ground) to be 107.3cm long?
The answer for question 1 is v=0.333c and the answer for question 2 is: "Not possible". I just want to know the process and how to approach these questions with formulas and thinking.
Explanation / Answer
l = lo*(1 - (v/c)^2)
1-0.057 = 1 - (v/c)^2
v = 0.23874c
1.073 = 1 - (v/c)^2
v/c = imaginary ( not possible)
