If the ball has a speed of 8.8 m/s just before striking the floor, and a speed of 3.1 m/s just after bouncing, find the average force of the floor on the ball. Assume that the ball is in contact with the floor for 0.64 s, and that the mass of the ball is 0.73 kg. Submit Answer Tries 0/5 Send Feedback Post Discussion 7:08 PM 5/2/2016

Explanation / Answer

we know that change in momentum = average force* duration of force

   Dp = F*Dt

mass of ball m= 0.73 kg, initialspeed vi = 8.8 m/s, after bouncing the speed vf = 3.1 m/s

duration of force is Dt = 0.64 s

now the average force F = DP/Dt = m(vf-vi)/Dt = 0.73(3.1-8.8)/(0.64) = - 6.50 N

the average force of the floor on ball is 6.50 N
