Question

6. Sabrina spent a week in the Florida Keys on vacation. She noted that her skin felt very dry after each day she spent at the beach. Explain why Sabrina's skin felt dry using the scientific words, isotonic, hypertonic and Osmosis is useful in plants because it is one of the processes used to manage water volume inside the plant. The diagram shows part of a plant root The cell membrane is a partialy permesble membrane. 7. How do you think the mineral salts get into the root hair cells? Explain your answer 8. How does the high concentration of mineral salts inside the root hair cell help the plant to absorb water from the soil? dilute soluzion of mineral salts of mineral salts 75%

Explanation / Answer

6. As sea water has high salt, it can be considered as saline water. This is hypertonic. And in that environment, as the solute content in the body cell is lower than the surrounding, water is transported out of the cell, as well as the body. Thus, body becomes dehydrated, and skin will be drier. That’s why Sabrina’s skin felt dry at the beach.

7. Mineral salts enter through the cell wall and cell membrane of the root hair cell through osmosis. Osmosis occurs because solvent molecules from the soil tend to pass from a diluted solution to a concentrated one in the root through a partially permeable membrane. Root hair cells are the outgrowths of roots at their tips. They function solely to take up mineral salts. These cells have large vacuoles that allow storage of water and mineral salts. Their small diameter (5-17 micrometres) and greater length (1500 micrometres) help to get a large surface area, that help to absorb water and mineral salts.

8. From the soil, water enters root by osmosis and also by auaporins. Root hair cell is hypertonic to the soil water. This suggests it has a lower water concentration. That’s why osmosis occurs.
