Question
The conducting rod ab shown in the figure below makes contact with metal rails ca and db. The apparatus is in a uniform magnetic field of 1.20 V. perpendicular to the plane of the figure Find the magnitude of the emf induced in the rod when it is moving toward the right with a speed 8.00 m/s. In what direction does the current flow in the rod? If the resistance of the circuit abdc is 1.5 Ohm and does not change, find the force (magnitude and direction) required to keep the rod moving to the right with a constant speed of 8.00 m/s. What is the rate at which thermal energy is developed in the circuit?Explanation / Answer
a) B =1.2 T , L =50 cm , v =8 m/s
from faradays law V =BVL
V = 1.2*0.5*8 = 4.8 V
(b) from flming right hand rule induced current direction is clock wise direction
(c) R =1.5 ohm
From ohms law V = iR
4.8 = i*1.5
i = 3.2 A
F = iLB = 3.2*0.5*1.2 = 1.92 N
(d) P = IV = 4.8*3.2 = 15.36 w
