Question
A converging lens has a focal length of 25 cm. Locate the images for the following object distances if they exist. (Enter 0 in the q and M fields if no image exists.) (a) 25.00 cm q = Correct: Your answer is correct. . m = Correct: Your answer is correct. . Select all that apply to part (a). no image real upright inverted virtual Correct: Your answer is correct. . . (b) 6.25 cm q = Incorrect: Your answer is incorrect. . m = Incorrect: Your answer is incorrect. . Select all that apply to part (b). virtual inverted no image real upright Correct: Your answer is correct. . . (c) 75.00 cm q = Incorrect: Your answer is incorrect. . m = Select all that apply to part (c). upright real virtual no image inverted Correct: Your answer is correct. . .
Explanation / Answer
for converging lens, f = + 25 cm
a) if object is placed is at focus then image will at inifinity.
hence, q = 0 , m = 0
b) do = 6.25 cm
1/f = 1/do + 1/di
1/25 = 1/6.25 + 1/di
di = - 8.33 cm ....image distance ( on the same of lens as object)
(di is -ve, so image will be virtual. )
m = - (di / do) = - (-8.33 / 6.25) = + 1.33
(m is +ve hence image will be upright )
c) do = 75 cm
1/f = 1/do + 1/di
1/25 = 1/75 + 1/di
di = 37.5 cm ......image distance.
(di is +ve , so image is real. )
m = - (di / do) = - (37.5) / 75 = - 0.5
(minus indicates that image is inverted)
