Question
1. An RFLP can be created
a) Only by a deletion removing a restriction enzyme reognition site
b) only in RNA
c) By any mutational event that creates or deletes a restriction enzyme recognition site
d) Only by a mutation creating a new restriction enzymme recognition site
2. RFLPs are useful for
a) For molecular tracking inheritance of a segment of DNA
b) mapping disease genes by tracking co-inheritance
c) For predicting if a person carries a particular disease-causing mutation
d) All of the above
e) None of the above
Explanation / Answer
1. Option C is correct
Restriction fragment length polymorphism is a kind of technique used for the detection of polymorphism or changes in the DNA. In this restriction enzymes are used which cuts DNA at specific site.
They recognise restriction site and different DNA have different restriction sites that is why fragments of DNA with different lengths was generated. These fragments are allowed for gel electrophoresis and then size was determined by comparison with DNA marker.
So when mutation happened in the DNA sequences deletion or formation of restriction sites occurs which leads to differences in banding pattern.
2.
Option D is correct.
RFLP is used for many purposes like DNA fragments size detection, detection of restriction sites and their number, gene mapping for all purposes, deasesed allele identification.
