Question
In a truck- loading station at a post office, a small 0.200-kg package is released from rest at point A on a track that is one quarter of a circle with radius 1.60 m. The size if the package is much less than 1.60 m, so the package can be treated as a particle. It slides down the track and reaches point B with a speed v. From point B, it slides on a level surface a distance of 3,00 m to point C, where it comes to rest. (a) Find the velocity of the package at point B, assuming that there is no friction on the ramp.(b) Find the coefficient of friction between the package and the horizontal surface.Explanation / Answer
5. a) Linear momentum of the (bullet + block) system is conserved.
=> 0.015 * 120 = (0.015 + 1.8)v
=> v = 0.992 m/s
b) The KE of the block converts to PE as it reaches a maximum height h.
1.8 * 0.9922 / 2 = 1.8 * 9.81 * h
=> h = 0.05 m
c) Distance travelled, s = v2/2a = v2/2kg = 0.9922 / (2 * 0.25 * 9.81) = 0.2 m
d) Conserving linear momentum, we get,
0.015 * 120 = (0.015 * 40) + 1.8v
=> v = 0.67 m/s
