The index of refraction for red light in water is 1.331, and that for blue light is 1.340. If a ray of white light enters the water at an angle of incidence of 80.80°, what are the underwater angles of refraction for the blue and red components of the light?Please show all work The index of refraction for red light in water is 1.331, and that for blue light is 1.340. Explanation / Answer
For this we only have to use Snell’s law:
red = sin^-1[nair*sini / nred]
= sin^-1[(1.000*sin80.80)/1.331]
= 47.87 deg
blue = sin^-1[nair*sini / nred]
= sin^-1[(1.000*sin80.80)/1.340]
= 47.45 deg
