Question

The index of refraction for red light in water is 1.331, and that for blue light is 1.340. If a ray of white light enters the water at an angle of incidence of 80.80°, what are the underwater angles of refraction for the blue and red components of the light?

Explanation / Answer

For this we only have to use Snell’s law:

red = sin^-1[nair*sini / nred]

= sin^-1[(1.000*sin80.80)/1.331]

= 47.87 deg

blue = sin^-1[nair*sini / nred]

= sin^-1[(1.000*sin80.80)/1.340]

= 47.45 deg
