Question
1. Compare the antibiotic susceptibility of Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria. A. Which antibiotics are effective against Gram-positives but not effective against Gram-negatives? Suggest a reason why. (Hint: this might have to do with the mechanism by which an antibiotic stops bacterial growth.) B. Which antibiotics are effective against both types of bacteria? What characteristics are shared between Gram-positives and Gram-negatives that allow these antibiotics to work against both?Explanation / Answer
Answer a-
All beta lactams like penicillins, cephalosporins, and carbapenems are effective against gram positive but not effective against gram negative. It is because gram-negative bacteria have lipopolysaccharide membrane that stops b-lactams to enter into the cell.
Answer b-
Broad-spectrum antibiotics such as Chloramphenicol, Cefoxitin and imipenem are effective aginst both type of bacteria. These proteins are protein synthesis inhibitor. Therefore, these can kill both type of bacteria.
