Question
Problem 30.18
Part A
Calculate the total binding energy, and the binding energy per nucleon, for 73Li. The masses of the atoms of 73Li and 11H are 7.016004 u and 1.007825 u, respectively. The mass of a neutron is 1.008665 u.
Express your answers using four significant figures separated by a comma.
Part B
Calculate the total binding energy, and the binding energy per nucleon, for 19578Pt. The mass of the atom is 194.964774 u.
Express your answers using four significant figures separated by a comma.
Explanation / Answer
A) mass of Li atom = 7.016004 u
no of protons, z = 3
no of neutrons, N = 4
use
Mass defect = z*mp + N*mn - m_Li
= (3*1.007825 + 4*1.008665 - 7.016004 ) u
= 0.042131 u
so, binding energy = 0.042131*931.5 Mev (since 1 amu = 931.5 MeV)
= 39.24 MeV <<<<<<-----Answer
B)
mass of Pt atom = 194.964774 u
no of protons, z = 78
no of neutrons, N = 195 - 78 = 117
use
Mass defect = z*mp + N*mn - m_Pt
= (78*1.007825 + 117*1.008665 - 194.964774) u
= 1.659381 u
so, binding energy = 1.659381*931.5 Mev (since 1 amu = 931.5 MeV)
= 1546 MeV <<<<<<-----Answer
