Question
This is astronomy question. I want know the answer about them.
Thinking about more familiar objects, which of the following pairs of objects would make a good scale model of the Earth and the Moon?
a) A basketball and a soccer ball
b) A basketball and a baseball or softball
c) A basketball and a ping-pong ball
d) A basketball and a pea
e) A basketball and a grain of sand
Using these in a scale model of the Moon in orbit around the Earth, how far apart would you have to place your two objects? To simplify, assume the basketball is 1 foot (12 inches) in diameter. How far away will you have to place your 3 inch model of the Moon? Answer and explain briefly:
Explanation / Answer
ans is b)
since the size ratio of earth:moon is 3.7 approx
Again taking the basketball for the Earth, the distance between both should be 0.3185 /(12742 / 384400) = 9.6 m, where 384400 km is the distance between the Earth and the Moon. To be precise, 9.6 m is the distance between themiddle of the balls. To get the distance between the outside of the balls, we need to subtract half the diameter of each, which results in 9.6 - (0.3185 + 0.086) ÷ 2 = 9.19 m.
