Explanation / Answer

ANSWER

Part A)

The amount of energy deposited from 1 kg of absorbing material = 10^-2 J

Mass of absorbing material = 60 kg

The energy deposited =60x10^-2 J

So, the energy is absorbed by a 60-kg person receiving a 250-mrad whole-body absorbed dose of radiation

            = (60x10^-2 J)(250x10^-3 rad)

              =  0.15 J   ANS.

Part B)

X-rays are much more penetrating than Beta-rays and hence more harmful for human body. Thus, it is better to absorb 250mrad of Beta-rays.

Part C)

The dose for x-rays is,

Dose in rem = Dose in rad X RBE

Dose in rem = (250 x 10^-3 rad)(1.0) = 0.250 rem   ANS.

Part D)

For beta rays,

Dose in rem = Dose in rad X RBE = (0.250 rad)(1.7) = 0.425 rem   ANS.
