Explanation / Answer

1) The partial pressure of oxygen present in blood is plotted on the x-axis.

2) Po2 refers to the partial pressure of oxygen in the blood. Oxygen and carbondioxide are the two major gases of our body. These gases are found as a mixture in our blood. The amount of pressure that would be exerted by individual gas in the mixture if it occupied same volume at same tempreture as that of the mixture on its own, it is called as its partial pressure. So each gas in mixture has its own partial pressure and summation of partial pressures of all the individual gases gives the total pressure of the mixture.

Oxygen binds to haemoglobin present in our blood. After sometime all the haemoglobin molecule gets saturated with oxygen so there remains some bound and also some unbound oxygen in the blood.

PO2 refers to the dissolved form of oxygen present in the blood.

3) On the y-axis, fractional saturation of haemoglobin is plotted. It is the fraction of haemoglobin being saturated with oxygen molecules.

4) When YO2 reaches 1.0 which means 100% saturation point. At that time all the molecules are saturated with oxygen so each molecule of haemoglobin carries a maximum of four molecules of oxygen. A haemoglobin molecule has got only sites to hold the oxygen molecules.
